cadence reviewFollow Ups | Post Followup | Bill Dixon Bulletin BoardPosted by andrew lindstrom on December 21, 2002 at 20:21:09:
just writing to mention the boneheaded review of the new victo cd with taylor/oxley that appeared in this month's cadence issue. i forgot the name of the guy who wrote it, but he doesn't deserve to be paid for his biased, inherently subjective claptrap (hopefully he wasn't). he fixates on your atmospheric use of reverb & delay (as if you use them to make up for technical shortcomings), and even questions your ability to play your horn at one point! in the year 2002, after 2 volumes of papyrus and berlin abbozzi, not to mention the odyssey box! cecil and oxley are blindly praised, taylor in particular for his unprecedented "minimalist" approach-as if your patient, expansive, and highly individual playing had nothing to do with cecil's measured (as opposed to torrential) responses. i know this lack of critical objectivity and understanding is nothing new to you, and i'm aware of the battle you had w/cadence over the odyssey box, but this poor excuse for informed cultural criticism is still upsetting, esp. from a magazine that claims to be the first word on free improvisation. i am a 26 year old drumset player who got into you thru an interest in tony oxley's work. your music, fierce personal individuality, and clear-headed critiques of the industry have served as an great inspiration, esp. since there are so few of my own generation willing to confront the challenges of today's musical landscape head-on. thanks you. andrew lindstrom denver, colorado
